The Ministry of Higher Education has halted scholarships to Great Britain and Australia due to the large number of Saudi students in the two countries.
The deputy minister of Higher Education for Scholarships, speaking at the opening Sunday of a scholarship student forum in Riyadh organized as part of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Scholarship Program, said that Great Britain alone already had 15,000 Saudis studying there.
“There are other countries equally capable of providing the scientific and academic competence provided by those two countries,” Deputy Minister Abdullah Al-Mousa said. Al-Mousa said that the rise in students expected to attend the forums in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al-Khobar by around 3,000 on last year is a natural consequence of the increase in scholarships granted, the number of countries to which they are sent, and in the fields of study available. “It’s also a result of the state’s desire to serve as large a number as possible of the students on the program, from which the country has recently started to reap the benefits,” Al-Mousa said.
The five-day Riyadh forum is expected to be attended by 1,900 candidates for the scholarship program coming from Riyadh, Qassim, Hail, Al-Jouf, and the Northern Border province. (via Okaz/SG)
